Example Calculation

Scenario: What if Ethereum had Bitcoin's market cap of $1.2 trillion?

  • Ethereum circulating supply: ~120,000,000 ETH
  • Target market cap: $1,200,000,000,000 (Bitcoin's market cap)
  • Implied ETH price: $10,000 per ETH
  • Multiplier from current ~$3,500 price: ~2.86x

How the Math Works

  1. Start with market cap — pick a target market capitalization. Here we use Bitcoin's ~$1.2 trillion:Target market cap = $1,200,000,000,000
  2. Divide by circulating supply — the implied price per coin is simply the target market cap divided by the number of coins in circulation:$1,200,000,000,000 ÷ 120,000,000 ETH = $10,000 per ETH
  3. Compare to current price — divide the implied price by the current price to get the growth multiplier:$10,000 ÷ $3,500 = 2.86x

Another example: What if Solana had Ethereum's market cap of $420B?

  • SOL circulating supply: ~430,000,000 SOL
  • Implied SOL price: $420B ÷ 430M = ~$977 per SOL

Market cap comparisons help set realistic expectations. A low-priced coin with a massive supply may already have a very large market cap. Use the interactive calculator above with live data to explore any pairing.

Understanding Market Cap

Market capitalization (market cap) is calculated by multiplying the current price by the circulating supply of coins. It represents the total value of all coins in circulation and is the primary metric for comparing the relative size of cryptocurrencies.

Why Market Cap Matters

  • A coin's price alone doesn't tell you how “big” or “valuable” the project is
  • Market cap helps compare different cryptocurrencies on equal footing
  • It sets realistic price expectations — a coin with 100B supply can't easily reach $1M per coin
  • Understanding market cap prevents the common mistake of comparing coins by price alone
